Yard Waste Reminders from Residential Standards

Yard waste collection begins in April and ends in December (specific dates are announced each spring). If there is a holiday during the week, then the pickups are delayed by one day. Please put trash, bulk, and yard waste out after 6pm the night before pick up and retrieve empty containers by 9am the morning after pick up. Thieves know you are not at home if your empty trash containers are sitting outside. All yard waste (grass clippings, small tree branches, leaves, etc.) must be bagged in biodegradable paper bags. Dog waste should be carefully bagged and placed in approved trash containers.

Additionally, we’ve noticed a lot of lawn bags in the right of way or on curb side of many lawns. These bags should be kept in the back and set up the night before bulk and lawn bag pick up.  There is a specific ordinance (Detroit Municipal Code, Division 3, Sections 42-2-48 & 42-2-50.) that speaks to the issue of bulk items and lawn bags.

NOTE: YARD WASTE IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED BY WASTE MANAGEMENT

As a reminder, as long as there is not a holiday (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day} on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday of that week, the trash/yard/recycling pickup days are:
