The careful planning, planting and tending of the perennials in the planter box at SavOn are yielding beautiful results. Beautification volunteers who are weeding, pruning, watering and planting report frequent compliments and enthusiastic question from passersby, so happy to see the growth and progress!
A big breakthrough (literally) in June was the restoration of a broken water pipe that can be used to water the plants, generously provided by Marvin Pattah, the owner of SavOn Foods. This enhancement means that volunteers no longer have to fill jugs of water at home and bring them to the box. UDCA would like to express great appreciation to Mr. Pattah for this enhancement.
As native, perennial pollinator-friendly plants are added, we will start identifying them with small stakes in the ground, so interested people know what the plant is, if they want to add it to their yard or flower garden. So far, mostly through donations, we’ve added Blanket Flower, Ironweed, Prairie Poppy Mallow, Cup Plant, Black-Eyed Susan, Joe Pye Weed, Coral Bells, Purple Cone Flower, Lavendar, Chickory, and preserved existing Catmint, Swamp Milkweed, Dianthus and Hosta.
Meanwhile, the rose bushes that were removed from the planter box last Fall and this Spring are doing very well in their new homes, and being cared for by UDCA Members. The distinctive University District sign that graces the box, created by a resident about 25 years ago, will be restored by volunteers. More on that next month…
