The Detroit Literacy Coalition is excited to announce the culmination of its 8-week summer writing and sustainable community garden programs, MotorCity Storytellers and Ujima Garden Lab.
You are invited to the celebration on Monday, August 18, 2025, at 5:00 PM at New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 4445 West Outer Dr., Detroit, MI 48221.
The event will highlight the MotorCity Storytellers, showcasing their book release, and will also include a guided tour of the Ujima Garden Lab. This summer, young writers from across Detroit engaged in storytelling, creative writing, and self-expression. The program concludes with a showcase of their written works and the garden they helped nurture—symbolizing growth both in their writing and within the community.
“The event will celebrate the voices of these young Storytellers and the vibrant space they’ve helped create,” said Dr. Sharon Murphy, program executive director. “The MotorCity Storytellers program is about nurturing creativity. The Ujima Garden Lab is about building sustainable spaces and making connections. This summer, the young Storytellers and Gardeners brought the visions to life.”
